Ghost Road Blues A Pine Deep Novel Jonathan Maberry Books

This book is a great read that keeps you wanting more. This is the first book of the Pine Deep trilogy and it really sets the pace for the other books. Very scary and suspenseful with not too more gore but enough to get you cringing. The action is plentiful and thrilling that keeps you turning the pages. The characters are very strong and well defined and you will find yourself routing for the good guys.

The story is set around Halloween and it gave me plenty of goosepbumps and had me turning on the lights at night.

If you like very scary books, you must read this one!

Ghost Road Blues A Pine Deep Novel Jonathan Maberry Books Reviews

Ghost Road Blues is the first of three books written by Jonathan Maberry in his Pine Deep Trilogy.

This first book sets up the scene of a quiet little town that comes to life during the Halloween season. The town capitalizes on the local folk lore and ghost stories. Unbeknownst to them, there is true evil buried in their land and it has been waiting 30 years to rise again.

This is not a fast paced, non-stop action story. It’s an atmospheric, evil, paranormal story. Jonathan Maberry has taken his time to create the perfect word pictures needed to build tension, describe the land, and introduce you to the citizens.

Crow is our hero, a man of average height who can beat the crap out of any comer. Val, a tough as nails farmer’s daughter is Crow’s girlfriend. Terry is the mayor, Crow’s best friend. He is cursed, but I don’t think he truly knows how. He sees his dead sister. Tow-truck Eddie thinks he’s doing God’s work. Vic is a mean-nasty man full of the evil that fills the land. Mike, 14 years old, is Vic’s stepson and punching bag. Mike has a vivid imagination, likes to pretend he is a superhero, and is a protégé of Crow’s. Ruger is a thief and murder who crashes into town and gets mixed up in the evil. Not something that is hard for him since he is already consumed by evil. Then, there is The Man and the Bone Man.

This story isn’t for the faint of heart. There are graphic scenes of violence, evil thoughts, and evil deeds. The bad guys know what’s up but our heroes haven’t yet figured it out. Also, there is no conclusion in this book. It is just the first book in a longer story. I’m looking forward to reading the next two. I think I have a couple of things figured out but don’t want to spoil it for you.
I decided to read this book after reading most of this Author's Joe Ledger series, which is great and fun to read. I'm assuming this is his first novel or something, because the writing is just terrible. The book drags on with pages of detail that in no way advances the plot or character development; the roads (by number) that the various officers or characters are driving. And everything is so cliché. Small town police are rubes, etc. I was excited to find this book and even more excited to find out it was a trilogy. An author I liked and a genre I love. I will NOT be reading the final two books. I have no desire to find out what happens to these people, because the author didn't make me care. An example of the terrible writing I had to slog through. 2 cops sitting in a car. Neither had really been introduced earlier, and near the end of the book, when the action should be climaxing, he instead decides to tell us what the one officer thinks of the other. And he goes on and on and on about it. Then says "in short, he thought...." this of her. And then went on and on again about it. All for what?? Nothing.
Also, random references to music was forced. The mayor makes a reference to a jazz drummer in the middle of all the chaos and carnage going on. Doesn't ring true at all. We get it, Maberry. You know your music.
So, I've gone on for awhile here, but, in honor of the author, "in short", this book sucks. Don't read it. It's poorly written, poorly developed and poorly edited.
This is the first book of a trilogy. Right from the beginning I noticed that the editing is the worst that I've ever encountered in a novel. There are verb tenses that are incorrect and even places that don't make sense like when they are using a digital camera and the author says they used it until the shutter wouldn't work because the film ran out. When the author tries to make a dramatic point he goes on and on to the point where I say to myself "OK, already, I got it." The story itself is so far OK. It is a supernatural thriller set in a small town. His character development is good but some of the towns people characters get away with things that would not be tolerated in the real world such as Vic's extreme domestic violence that everyone knows about.
