Torment Fallen Book 2 Lauren Kate Books
It's been three years since I read Fallen, because I was worried that Torment would be more of the same, but finally I have succumb to the call of the pretty cover. Thankfully, I did like this one better. There are parts that I liked less, like that slow, repetitive, boring beginning, but then there's some really interesting stuff happening, too. It picks up with Daniel delivering Luce to another new school, since she's no longer safe at their former reform school. Now, she's in California at a kind of prep school for Nephilim where she'll be protected while Daniel goes off and does what he does for eighteen days. Luce is left mostly in the dark about the situation, which prompts her to do some research of her own.My favorite part of Torment was learning more about the shadows (which were mostly really dumb in the first book). They're not just creepy blobs of darkness, but messengers known as Announcers for those in the know. Each one can show a snippet of the past if you know how to summon one (which Luce does) and how to "glimpse." Of course, Luce is special among humans and figures out how to do this complicated task and uses it to explore her past lives. Quite interesting. Then there are hints at time travel! I love time travel, but it's not something I would expect from a Paranormal Romance about angels and demons. But then when you consider the reincarnation bits, it does make sense. Luce has to uncover he past lives somehow, since Daniel refuses to explain.
Most of the first part of Torment is just Luce moping after Daniel. Eighteen days is such an eternity! Wah, wah, wah! However, I could totally understand her frustration over not knowing why he's going to be away and why she had to transfer. But, I did find it annoying when Luce would just leave campus, despite being told not to, just because she claims she didn't know how dangerous it was for her elsewhere since no one will tell her anything. I totally wanted to high five one of her "teachers" when he said they shouldn't have to be so explicit, since it's fairly obvious someone is out to get her! Come on, Luce! Use your brain! Then there's the parts where Luce finally starts to question everything Daniel has told her, which wasn't much. Daniel's word is not gospel! There's something he's hiding, and maybe life and love is possible for Luce without him, even though they've spent centuries losing and finding each other.
In the end, I kind of liked Torment. It didn't annoy me as much as Fallen, since Luce is finally coming out of the Daniel haze and starting to think for herself, even if it does get her in trouble, since she seems to only be able to think about one thing at a time. Mostly I was just excited to see how this time travel aspect works in Passion!

Torment Fallen Book 2 Lauren Kate Books Reviews
Torment, the second book in Lauren Kate's Fallen series, picks up with Luce leaving Sword & Cross and moving (without her parents' knowledge) across the country to the exclusive Shoreline School where she will be supposedly safe from those enemies who want to see she and Daniel parted forever. Luce finds herself being kept in the dark as Cam and Daniel combine forces to fight the Fallen, and she doesn't take it lightly; but when she discovers that Shoreline is a haven for the Nephilim (offspring of a human and an angel), she feels less alone. With the help of her roommate Shelby and new friend Miles, Luce begins to take control of the shadowy Announcers that have plagued her, and also begins attending exclusive classes designed to educate the Nephilim. But the biggest change? Luce becomes unsure of her relationship with Daniel after all his secrecy and the constant bickering between them.
For the most part, I absolutely loved Torment. I especially love that Luce has doubts about her eternal, undying love for Daniel; that makes it so much more realistic than many of the other young adult books out there. I love that Luce is taking charge of her life, making her own decisions, trying to find out more about those mysterious past lives that she shared with Daniel. I loved the new characters, including Miles; while as a romantic I naturally want to see Luce end up with Daniel, I can see the appeal of Miles and I like that I'm torn between the two. Shelby is too much fun, and I also enjoyed the additions of Francesca and Steven as teachers (but do I detect something more sinister in those two? Hmmmm....).
What works in Torment works really, really well. There is quite a bit of bickering between Luce and Daniel, and the frustration between them is mounting. But when they work as a couple, they truly work. There were moments when I wished the action would move on a little more quickly, but I was enthralled with the Announcers and the way they can take Luce into the past. As with any sequel, I also have to remind myself that I'm not in charge; it's all up to the author and where she wants to take us. And so far, I'm right along for the ride. Passion, the next in the series, is already pre-ordered and I'm revved up for it.
I really enjoyed this book. This is the second book in the Fallen series. It really delivered more on how the main protagonist, Luce, is dealing with the new realization of her "story" and her struggles to try to understand who she is and who she can trust. This books helps to unfold Luce's struggles with discovering who she is and how her life became to be like this. This book deals with Luce's questions on her past. I love the romance in this book series and I love the story building with the different types of characters. It is a must read for anyone who enjoys love stories that span the test of time. I will definitely be continuing this series
