What a tale that was! Having been curious about NEW AMSTERDAM history and my own heritage there, this was more than I could have asked for. Because I also got a taste of 17th century sailing, native Leno-Lenape food prep and even ginseng exploits! I thought I would read a nice narrative of my 10th great-grandmother Penelope, who I just recently found I was related to, who was renowned for surviving a shipwreck, Indian attack and 17th century childbirth many times over. This was a well researched AND very entertaining fictional story based on real events, people and real history. I loved it! And I believe the author did too. It was a treat to learn about the religious and political upheavals through characters interacting during this time of colonialism and emigration. I just felt that a lot of care was taken to get a real feel for the times Penelope lived and went through much in. I especially enjoyed Richard Stout' s biblical English. Just the right amount of danger, debauchery and good old-fashioned (the way it should be) romance :-).

Great book, this is about my 8x great grandparents (Stout)
An interesting story. The book begins a little slowly and sometimes gets a little bogged down in almost too many details about navigational terms as Penelope begins her journey to America. But it is a very interesting tale and gains momentum as her adventures in America unfold. I would recommend the book and I think the author has done a good job.
I am Penelope Stout's 7-great granddaughter, and have been fascinated with the many, many Google references to her remarkable life. Jim McFarlane has taken those dry "facts," and has brought her to life as a person. I have great appreciation for the research and time that went into his sensitive portrayal. I have ordered copies for each of my children and grandchildren -- and even good friends. I'm proud to be a part of this lady's ancestry and thoroughly enjoyed the good read.
(I'm 88 -- maybe if her genes have survived I'll live to be 110 as she reportedly did!)
Penelope Stout was an ancestor of mine and for years my relatives and I have mused over the story of this amazing woman who survived a shipwreck, was attacked by by one group of Indians and saved by others, and then had many children while living past 100. Jim McFarlane has brought the early part of her adulthood to life. I want to learn more.
I'm a direct descendant of Penelope and Richard, as is the author. This book is mostly fiction, and I was looking for something more factual.
I enjoyed this story very much. I read and listened at the same time. I love audio books and wish this was told by some one that can pronounce words correctly. I recommend reading this book, not listening as I did. I know most of those buying Penelope A Novel is also related to Penelope as I am. She is my 7th Great Grandmother on my Daddy's side. Thank-you Jim. It was nice chatting with you.
I gave this to our 4 oldest kids for Christmas and our 32 year old son spent all day Christmas Day reading it and enjoyed it very much!!! Penelope Stout is my direct ancestor and I have been proud to tell her story to many people over the years. What a brave and courageous woman she was!! I'm so glad this wonderful book was written so well because it really honors her for her amazing and exemplary life!
